The bear survives, but most of his tree is gone. I'm not sure where to go from here. It will either be a major breakthrough, or a pathetic failure.

Hmmm...I like the direction you're going. How about if I leave him in the tree, but give him a little cigarette?
Maybe that would make him look a little more dangerous. And European.
or you could have him chewing on the lone hiker who fell behind the rest of the group, that always makes bears appear more charming.
